Kersten Schmidt – Principal Engineer and Project Manager

Kersten is a well respected and experienced electrical engineer with extensive experience in utility scale, commercial and residential solar PV, wind farms, energy storage systems and microgrids having worked on projects from Arnhem Land to Antarctica to Alice Springs and Alaska.

Kersten has engineered and project managed some of Australia’s landmark solar farms as well as utility and commercial solar systems, wind diesel projects, wind farms and has been the Technical Manager Australia for the Swiss solar PV inverter manufacturer SolarMax.

Kersten has undergone the rigorous program to become certified as a Certified Practicing Project Manager CPPM by the Australian Institute of Project Management AIPM, the peak industry body in this field.

In the late 80’s with conventional energy resources and nuclear power embraced in many countries around the world as a cheap, endless power source, Kersten, had a vision of renewable energy becoming mainstream. He decided to study electrical engineering with renewables as a special focus.

He started his career in the renewable energy industry with now leading global solar inverter manufacturer SMA in Germany in 1992.

Kersten moved to Australia in the mid 90’s.

Here he helped to establish the first few major wind farms in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

He engineered and project managed some of the landmark turnkey multi MW wind diesel hybrid power stations around Australia and the globe, including in Antarctica.

Kersten then expanded into solar power, developing low cost concentrating solar PV dishes for Solar Systems. Then he was in charge of engineering of some of the biggest solar PV farms in the country with BP Solar (from 10-150MW). He also worked on many commercial size systems and provided support for all kind of residential and commercial grid connected and off-grid systems, including tracking solutions, free-field and roof top installations.

Kersten is a:

  • Professional Electrical Engineer (University of Kassel, Germany)
  • Certified Practising Project Manager by the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM)
  • Member of the Smart Energy Council (SEC)
  • Member of the Renew

Art Drayton – Senior Energy Engineer

As an experienced civil engineer, Art has been working for many local government bodies and the private sector in building design and construction.

Art has been passionately interested in conservation and sustainability issues, promoting sustainability practices ever since his parents built their own sustainable home in the late 50’s, including building a scale model and obtaining sun path data from CSIRO that enabled every room to have winter sun but being shaded in summer.

He has been professionally involved in the Sustainability Sector since 2009 working for the Federal Government as a Home Sustainability Assessor as well as being a technical assistant and advisor to the National Association of Building Sustainability Assessors (ABSA). In his spare time, he privately conducted energy audits and undertook monitoring and design of clean energy systems for commercial and domestic markets.

In the solar energy industry, Art has worked for multiple solar energy companies, conducting monitoring, auditing and design of clean energy systems to increase energy efficiency and reduce energy costs.

He has developed and conducted training and workshops in energy efficiency and sustainability for local councils’ sustainability programs as well as for the 100% Ready Program for the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.

Art is also the former Secretary of a regional Branch of the Alternative Technology Association (ATA), promoting sustainability in the local community and conducting workshops and discussion groups on sustainability issues.

He has also served as an Ambassador and educator for “Sustainable House Day”.
